Understanding PTSD,

Supporting Those Who Served

Because healing begins with understanding.

PTSD can affect anyone, but it is especially common among Veterans and First Responders who have lived through intense, life-altering experiences. Our fellowship exists to offer clarity, compassion, and long-term support to those carrying the invisible wounds of service.

About the Fellowship

A Safe Place to Begin Healing

PTSD can impact people long after the danger has passed, often in unexpected and overwhelming ways. For Veterans and First Responders, these experiences can be compounded by years of service, exposure to trauma, and the pressure to stay strong for others. The PTSD Recovery Fellowship was created to provide a safe, understanding community for those who have given so much — a place where healing can happen with dignity and support.

Why We Exist

Those who protect and serve others are often the last to ask for help themselves. Many carry burdens in silence, unsure where to turn or how to process what they’ve been through. Our fellowship bridges that gap by offering a 12-step program built on shared experience, peer support, and a compassionate approach to long-term recovery. Here, no one walks the journey alone.

Mission, Vision, and Values

Our Mission

Our PTSD 12-Step Recovery Fellowship is a crucial resource, offering a strong and ongoing support system specifically designed for veterans and first responders who suffer from PTSD. Our fellowship builds on the proven principles of various 12-Step programs, which have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in a wide range of recovery settings. Our unique approach is inclusive and non-denominational, thus allowing our members from all backgrounds to find comfort, strength, and recovery from PTSD.

Our Vision

A world where every individual who has served — whether on the battlefield or in emergency response — has access to understanding, fellowship, and the tools they need to rebuild a life of peace, purpose, and hope.

Our Core Values

  • Compassion
  • We meet each person with dignity, empathy, and respect, honoring the courage it takes to seek help.
  • Community
  • Shared experience creates strength. We heal by supporting one another, side by side.
  • Integrity
  • Honesty, accountability, and trust form the backbone of our fellowship and guide every interaction.
  • Hope
  • We believe recovery is possible for everyone, and we walk together toward a brighter future, one step at a time.
  • Service
  • As many have served others throughout their careers, we now serve one another through support, understanding, and fellowship.

What We Do

Peer Support & Fellowship

A judgment-free community where members feel understood, valued, and supported.

A Structured

12-Step Path

Designed specifically for PTSD recovery, emphasizing reflection, spiritual growth, and practical tools.

Long-Term Emotional Support

Encouraging stability, resilience, and lasting healing.

Education & Awareness

Guiding members and families to better understand PTSD and the path to recovery.

How the Fellowship Helps

The Power of
Shared Experience

Healing becomes possible when people gather in a space where they are understood without explanation. Our members connect with others who have lived through similar challenges — people who “get it” on a deeper level. This creates trust, safety, and a sense of belonging that can transform the recovery process.

A 12-Step Approach Designed for PTSD

Our program adapts proven 12-step principles to address the emotional, spiritual, and mental challenges of PTSD. Through structured reflection, spiritual growth (not religious doctrine), and ongoing personal work, individuals rediscover clarity, balance, and purpose.

Long-Term Support,
Not a Temporary Solution

The fellowship is built around continuity of care. Members gain tools they can return to for a lifetime — accountability, fellowship, understanding, and a compassionate community that stands beside them as they rebuild their lives.

Meet the Founder

Orville Keith Thomas

Born in 1940 and raised in a hardworking, humble family, Orville’s life took a profound turn at age 17 when he joined the U.S. Navy. Early exposure to trauma — including surviving a devastating 1961 plane crash that killed most of his crew — led to decades of undiagnosed PTSD. Like many Veterans, he coped in silence, turning to alcohol and carrying the belief that he had failed the men who died beside him.

His journey included years of struggle: alcoholism, nightmares, survivor’s guilt, and multiple suicide attempts. It wasn’t until he entered treatment in 1979 and later received an accurate PTSD diagnosis over 50 years after the crash that true healing began. Through faith, the 12 steps, and trauma-focused therapy, he found clarity, peace, and purpose.

After nearly five decades of sobriety and over ten years free from debilitating PTSD symptoms, Orville founded this fellowship to ensure that other Veterans and First Responders would never have to walk the path alone or wait a lifetime for help. His story is the foundation of the program: resilience, hope, and a belief that healing is possible at any stage of life.

The 12 Steps

1. We admitted that we were powerless over the effects of PTSD —that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves, identifying the effects of PTSD on our lives.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our PTSD.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. 7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, including ourselves, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and, when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to others suffering from PTSD, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

  • More

I have been in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction since July 15, 1989. Over the years, I have been involved in various 12-step programs, primarily Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Through these programs, I have had the opportunity to sponsor many women, guiding them through the 12-step process and supporting them in their recovery.

In my 40s, I served on the board of a mental health clinic as a patient advocate. This experience helped me understand how a mental health clinic operates and how the board makes decisions that affect patient care. In my late 40s, I acted as the executive director for a small non-profit organization that supported individuals with mental and emotional disorders.

I live with complex PTSD (cPTSD), which I developed partly due to receiving incorrect diagnoses and treatments for multiple mental disorders in adulthood. In 2023, at the age of 59, I finally received an accurate diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, level one (ASD-1). This diagnosis has been life-changing and has answered many questions I had about my life experiences.

The knowledge I have gained over the past few years through formal education and personal research has fueled my desire to work with organizations like PTSD Anonymous. I hope to play a role in helping others who, like me, are seeking peer support in learning how to live with PTSD and cPTSD. Currently, I am nearing the completion of a B.S. in Psychology from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. I believe that the knowledge acquired through my studies will enhance my ability to serve and support those seeking recovery through PTSD Anonymous.

Dr. James Patrick McCrea

PTSD Recovery Advisor

  • More

Dr. McCrea has over 25 years of experience in mental health therapies and holds several psychology certifications. His private practice primarily focuses on treating trauma in a diverse range of clients, often including multicultural counseling. After experiencing a catastrophic event that led to his own battle with PTSD, he expanded his services to provide therapy sessions specifically for both female and male veterans, as well as first responders with PTSD. His expertise in substance abuse counseling and facilitating group therapy sessions will greatly aid our Fellowship in its mission to provide maximum support to our members.

Dr. McCrea is also deeply interested in establishing a long-term study on PTSD that incorporates multicultural and gender perspectives, focusing on recovery outcomes and the continuity of care provided by the Fellowship 12-Step program. Aware of the statistics indicating that veterans and first responders experience some of the highest rates of PTSD and suicide, he believes that the study's findings could significantly aid the Fellowship in developing effective methodologies that would benefit all providers of PTSD care.

It is anticipated that the collection, compilation, and categorization will be accomplished with AI, implemented by Dr. McCrea and the Fellowships CTO, Guy Arbuthnot.
